Andrew Williams, With Grace and Spirit
With Grace and Spirit for solo guitar by Andrew William.
‘With Grace and Spirit’ is a longer piece in dropped D tuning. It has some obvious Spanish influences. Beginning with a pizzicato introduction, it introduces its first theme, a mysterious repeated phrase built around a 7th chord. This opening theme has a compelling rhythmic pattern of repeated triplet decorations. It moves subtly between keys through a series of modulations that provide an eerie quality, modulating mainly between D major and E flat major. The second theme is a moody mutation of the same rhythmic phrasing, this time in the key of G minor. The piece then returns to its first theme with some variations before breaking into a folkloric country dance melody in E flat that sits strangely in the piece, adding to the oddness of the whole. The whole composition somehow evokes the graceful movement of some undersea creatures such as the medusa.
