Collection: Darcey, Jane
Jane Darcey is an eclectic classical guitarist. A graduate of the University of Western Australia—where she gained a performance degree in music—she is a qualified Alexander Technique teacher and has primary accreditation in the Suzuki method of teaching. She combines teaching, performing, composing, and directing guitar ensembles and has produced three CDs, two of which include original works.
In search of new ways to touch the heart and soul, Darcey became entranced by the music of Gilbert Biberian, which blends his multicultural roots with originality and intensity using a unique and ever-developing system of extended tonality. Darcey’s studies with Biberian during the last four years of his life included lessons in guitar technique, performance practice and composition. The essence of Biberian’s advice on composition is to combine an intellectual and intuitive understanding of music with inspiration. Based on these studies, and under the guidance of Jonathan Paget, Associate Professor of Guitar at the Western Australian Academy of the Performing Arts, Darcey completed a Master of Arts degree in combined performance and composition in 2023. She is currently carrying out doctoral research on Biberian’s music at WAAPA, writing a biography of his professional life and continuing to create music.
