Portrait of Wolfgang Vedral

I was born in Vienna in 1956. At the age of 16, I discovered the guitar . . . but not the classical guitar. At that time the guitar was a kind of liberating instrument; everywhere young people with long hair were sitting in parks playing it.
Attending a Ralph Towner concert about five years later finally brought me to the classical guitar. I started classical guitar lessons and learnt there was such a thing as an apoyando. I practiced all the standard etudes.
After that, I completed a degree in guitar and music education at the University of Music in Vienna. This was followed by many years of teaching at a Viennese school, where guitar was offered as an optional subject in group lessons.
Since my retirement, I have increasingly devoted myself to composing guitar music.
