Sanja Pohl was born in Slovenia and is based in Madrid. She entered a state music school in her home town at the age of 8, studying piano and guitar. She continued her guitar studies at the Music Conservatory in Maribor, the University of Ljubljana, the Rostock University of Music and Theatre, the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and University Mozarteum in Salzburg.
Internationally acclaimed as a virtuoso performer, Plohl has received over 30 major awards including first prizes at Córdoba Guitar Festival, Ivor Mairants Award (London) and Seville International Guitar Competition. She wrote her first compositions for guitar and other instruments as a teenager, but subsequently focused mainly on her development as a concert guitarist. Returning to composition, she has recently pursued formal studies under Cuban-Spanish composer Eduardo Morales-Caso.
The pieces published here are rhythmically complex and harmonically sophisticated. Despite being accessible to the listener, they are adventurous and ambitious compositions, with great power and impact. They require of the player advanced technical skills.
