Steve Gibbs
Arranger-performer, analyst and composer

Born in Chicago in 1959 and settling in Belgium since the beginning of the 1990s, Steve Gibbs is a specialist of the eight-string classical guitar. Working in collaboration with master luthiers, he has developed an eight-string concert instrument that enables him to approach the transcription of historical contrapuntal works written for viols or keyboard, as well as contemporary classical music creation with its array of extended playing techniques, including amplified contact noise and normally unused microtonal string fractions. Professional training includes guitar performance and Western music history (California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles and Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester), Karnatic veena and voice in South India (where he lived from 1972-77), as well as Chogye Zen chant and Samul Nori percussion (Durham University, National Institute of Traditional Arts and Hwa Gye Sa Temple, Seoul). Over a 45-year performing career, Steve has shared his music with listeners in Asia, Europe and the USA. His past arranging work includes large-scale work on Bach and Narvaez, as well as piano music by Haydn and Schoenberg. Today, his « life mission » is his collaboration with composer Alain Féron on a vast cycle of music for 8-string guitar. The collection also contains two significant pieces for the 6-string guitar.
