Alexis Rodríguez Martínez
(Havana, 1978)
Alexis Rodríguez Martínez received his bachelor’s degree in Composition from the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba. He also holds a technical degree as a Guitar and Chamber Music Teacher. He is a member of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC) where he is an active participant in the organization of its annual contemporary music festival. His works has been premiered by some of the most renowned Cuban musicians at the most important festivals in his country, such as Festival Internacional de Música Contemporánea, Festival Primavera en La Habana de Música Electroacústica and the Laboratorio Nacional de Música Electroacústica. He is also a recurrent participant in the Semanas de Música Sacra at Centro Cultural “Padre Félix Varela”. The Mexican dúo Lux chordarum has premiered two song cycles inspired by poetry by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Amado Nervo.
He has been awarded in several competitions such as the Prize of the Concurso Nacional de Composición “Alejandro García Caturla” (2001), the Prize of the Concurso Nacional “José Ardévol” (2002 and 2013), Honorific Mention at Concurso Internacional de Composición de la Casa de las Américas (2017), the Prize at the Concurso Nacional de Composición “Harold Gramatges” (2017) and an Honorific Mention at the Certamen de Comoposición para Guitarra “Miquel Llobet” in Barcelona, Spain.
During the first year of the Pandemic, he wrote the cycle Criaturas del Encierro, where he daily composed 18 little preludes for solo guitar, all of which were premiered on social media the next day after its creation, by guitarists from Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, United States, and Venezuela.
