Andrew Williams, Imperfect
for solo guitar
Imperfect is a longer piece for solo classical guitar. It is strikingly melodic, having three distinct melodic themes, followed by a short rhythmic interlude and ending with a recapitulation of the first theme. The overall effect is large-scale and somewhat orchestral. Total playing time is a little over five minutes. The piece is full of interesting technical challenges for the player. The composer says: "The title derives from the fact that the piece started out as something quite different - something that I just could not get to work properly. I made progress by scrapping the original introduction and writing a new theme. This worked beautifully, but to the detriment of the second theme, which now sounded weak. So I re-wrote that too; but I could not get the new version to work with the original third theme, so that also got a re-write. Once I was happy with those, my original ending seemed too hasty; so I wrote the rhythmic interlude to steer me back to the first theme. I despaired of it ever being perfect, but I am pretty happy with the outcome."
