Andrew Williams, Floating World
For solo guitar.
'Floating World' is a slow waltz in A major evoking the state between waking and sleeping. It owes something to jazz music of a certain sort, and perhaps to Satie. The harmonies are spare and slow-moving, with a gentle melody floating above a steady bass. The melody is played once, then repeated in a subtly transformed and embellished form, making the second half of the piece more challenging for the player than the first. It is a composition that relies to a great extent on feel, inviting the player to achieve some downbeat, dreamy, late-night tones.
