Andrew Williams, A Trick of the Light
for solo guitar
A melodic prelude of just over 3.5 minutes, with essential fingering. A considerable challenge for the player, requiring some technical skill.
This piece has a number of recurring themes, and is split into sections with modulations between them. An introduction alternating between two chords comes before each section, but changed on each occasion. After the initial introduction comes the first extended melody, in E major. The second section switches to C# minor and transforms the original melody. The third section starts in F# minor and gradually builds to a lyrical section in A major. We return to E major for the last section which is part restatement of the original melody and part new material. This description makes it sound far more complex than it is - in reality, it is a succession of simple and immediate melodies supported by a constant harmonic movement.
