Andrew Williams, Three Short Pieces
These three short compositions share an introspective, reflective mood.
‘Regrets’ is a slow waltz influenced by Brazilian guitarists such as Baden-Powell. It makes use of discords and suspensions in the harmonies and has a ghostly brief carillon section which changes its mood entirely for a few short seconds.
‘Smoke’ has the feel of a torch song sung in a late-night bar. It has some unexpectedly baroque harmonic changes which draw the listener in – it should be played as if telling a story.
‘Found’ derives its name from the fact that the composer was trying – and failing – to capture another melodic idea, and this one came to the fore in its place. It is B major – a key rarely used in guitar composition. This opens up some interesting tonal possibilities, particularly with the use of open strings. The piece has an oddly timeless feel. For the performer, it feels dense and packs a lot into a short space of time.
