Johan S. Svendsen, Romance Op. 26
Arranged for violin and guitar (or cello/flute/viola) by Reidar Edvardsen.
In 1881 Svendsen composed his Romance Op.26 for violin and orchestra on demand from his Norwegian publisher. Not regarding it as significant, he sold for a trifle all rights to what was to become his most played and best-selling piece. The Romance was almost immediately a hit and has ever since defended its position in the standard violin repertory. Publishers soon supplied the market with arrangements for a number of different instrument combinations, some of them by famous artists like David Popper (1843-1913) cello, Heinrich Dessauer (1863-1917) viola and Wilhelm Barge (1836-1925) flute.
In the present arrangement, the guitar part is based on close reading of both orchestral and piano scores. The violin part is Svendsen’s original, and the other parts are based on the same.
