Andrew Williams, Air and Digressions

'Air and Digressions' is a piece full of interesting transitions.  The 'Air', sections A and B, is a lyrical, peaceful, hymn-like tune, originally written as a setting for a poem.  The 'Digressions', sections C D and E, are a set of 'perpetual motion' passages that call for advanced technique from the musician.  The player will need agility, speed and accuracy.  The Digressions are a journey into the past of guitar music, from a baroque mid-eighteenth-century feel to a more nineteenth-century classical guitar style, with a nod towards the likes of Sor, Aguado, Carulli or Giuliani.  The piece finally returns to its original theme and then quietly rises to an ethereal ending.  As a whole, it has momentum, vigour, melody and technical challenge.  It is aimed at advanced players.
