Martin Schley, Variations on a theme by Machaut
for solo guitar.
In my Variations on a theme by Machaut, I tried to build musical bridges over the almost largest possible distance in (written) European music history. The chosen theme, the song Puis qu´en oubli by French medieval composer Guillaume de Machaut (about 1300 – 1377) fascinated me because of its uncommon structure as well as its
unique expressiveness. Also, the harmonical particularities were an important aspect of this work. Throughout the piece, the theme is developed and transformed by very different musical languages and styles until it returns to its essence at the end.
The piece was written at the beginning of 2022 for my master exam concert.
First performance: St. Matthew church Dresden,
