Martin Schley, Three Bagatelles after Miró
for clarinet in B flat and guitar
The Three Bagatelles after Miró were composed in 2021 for a project of Musikhochschule Lübeck, which was about interpreting the paintings by the Spanish
surrealist through commission pieces on the one and improvisation on the other hand.
For this, I chose three paintings to be worked out in different forms of perspective concerning the musical structure. In the first piece Blue, the black dot line is transferred into a rhythmical pattern, on which the clarinet adds melodic fragments. In the second
movement, La Danseuse should create a form of “Character study” of dancing as an act of ambivalent emotionality and expression, which keeps its lightness within all kinds of conflicts. Finally, in Circus, I used the baroque gesture “circulatio” as the main motive and fundament.
First performance: June 17, 2021.
Sophie Kockler (clarinet), Martin Schley (guitar).
