These études offer a pedagogical approach to various guitar techniques. Each piece also presents a different programmatic image. The first of these, Candlelight Correspondence, is an intimate and reflective dance in the style of a sarabande. It represents an open letter to a loved one and serves as a study in sixths. The second piece, Travel by Twilight, is a study in rhythm and texture. The piece represents a scenic trip at dusk that moves towards a more celestial ending with harmonics reflecting the onset of a starry night. Although scored in 12/8, the beat is subdivided numerous ways resulting in a mixture of both compound and simple meter. The final étude, Prairie Path, is a study for right-hand technique while utilizing unusual chord shapes in the left hand. The title references a nature trail stretching west from Chicago. It is essentially a study of endurance. Right and left hand preparatory exercises offer a step-by-step approach to mastering the piece.
