Andrew Williams, North
'North' is a longer guitar solo with something of an epic feel. It increases in complexity and difficulty after the opening section, and is highly challenging to play. After an expansive opening theme, there is a repeat with embellishments and variations. Then, just after two minutes in, the piece modulates from its 'home' E minor key into A major for a long melodic section woven into extended open arpeggios - difficult to play but giving a warm, expansive feel. This is followed by a false reprise - the opening of the original theme is repeated but it mutates into a more 'classical' section with 19th century harmonies. This finally leads to a reprise of the second part of the main theme, extended and with variations, before closing. As a whole it fuses elements of classical guitar with echoes of more modern acoustic guitar/song.
