Andrew Williams, A Crowded Place
This piece is in some ways a technical exercise for both composer and guitarist. The piece is played entirely within the first five frets of the guitar, and uses every note available in that range. That was the composing challenge: the playing challenge is manoeuvering in this constricted area of the fretboard, which calls for some very dense fingering patterns. Even in the short compass of five frets, there are some testing stretches. Guitarists might find it easier with a capo on the second fret to reduce the extensions.
