Juan Erena, ESTUDIOS I-XII
For solo guitar.
The studies in this book came about mainly at the urging of musician friends who have played my compositions. Many of them have suggested that I should compose some works aimed at developing the guitarist’s technical skills. These studies address different aspects of guitar technique. They have been addressed by other composers in the long history of teaching literature for our instrument, but here they are explored through the lens of my own musical aesthetic.
The studies are not presented in order of increasing difficulty: they are simply given in the chronological order in which they were composed. To play these pieces well, you will need reasonably well-developed skills. I have chosen, in this edition, not to be prescriptive about fingering, leaving the player free to develop his or her own approach according to skill level and aesthetic preference.
I hope you enjoy playing these pieces as much as I have enjoyed composing them for you. I would like to think that with these studies I have contributed one more link to the great golden chain of instructive works for our instrument.
