J.S.Bach, Adagio from the Toccata BWV 564
BACH COLLECTION by Marek Wegrzyk
About the Adagio
This piece has a very special significance for me. It represents my meeting with the great Hungarian pianist and teacher György Sebök during his summer masterclasses in Ernen (Switzerland), which I still consider today to have been a truly life-changing experience. I first heard it performed by him at the end of the final concert there, and the utter beauty of his interpretation profoundly moved me. The urge to adapt the piece for guitar has, since then, never left me. Still, several years passed before I finally began working on the transcription in earnest, using the original organ version and Busoni’s piano transcription. I think the enormous desire to succeed was tempered by the fear that the piece might turn out to be impossible to play and that it would be unattainable beyond the indelible memory of it. The result you have now in your hands will always remain for me, the point of departure for the vast Bach transcription project that has kept me occupied ever since.
