Andrew Williams, Never Quite Like This
‘Never Quite Like This’ has a sweet song-like melody set to a chattering rhythmic accompaniment. It has an infectious momentum: its rich, full harmonies continuously develop as the piece progresses. It has a repeated motif of chromatic descending bass and subtly mutating chords. This piece could be from any era and it borrows from a number of different cultures, in particular South American guitar music; but is essentially a mid-tempo dance number in which the guitar plays all the parts. Despite its upbeat melody and rhythm, there is something nostalgic and regretful in it. Because of its constantly shifting chordal accompaniment and frequent changes of position, it is not easy to play and calls for some technique.
