Juan Erena, Variaciones sobre las Folías
Many composers have written variations on the theme "Folia", which is one of the oldest known melodies written. One of the best known is Haydn's Sarabande, but more than 150 composers are known to use the "Folias" in their works including Lully, Bach, Rachmaninov, and Ponce.
Guitarists probably know the variations on the Folias by Sor, Carulli, Giuliani, and Rebay and now Juan Erena has composed this 21st century set of variations in a modern musical language.
The composition includes a theme, eight variations and a finale. Carefully fingered by Juan Carlos Laguna.
