J.S.Bach, Prelude in B minor, BWV 855a
BACH COLLECTION by Marek Wegrzyk
This new series of Bach transcriptions for six-string guitar proposes a radically innovative approach from the start by using an altered tuning: E, A, C#, F#, B, E. The third string in F# is obviously a very well-known change, but the fourth string in C# was an experiment that created surprising results. By no means is it a miracle solution, but it provides more fluid and comfortable fingerings and enhances certain tonalities (D major, A major, B minor, F# minor), which enables multiple original harmonic solutions.
About the Siloti Prelude
The Bach/Siloti Prelude in B minor BWV 855a is a very particular work. This apparently straightforward piece written for his son Wilhelm Friedrich became the sublime Prelude n°10 in the first book of WellTempered Clavier. The Russian pianist A. Siloti (pupil of Liszt and teacher of Rachmaninoff) also transformed the original exercise by transposing the bass line to the treble and changing the tonality from E to B minor.
According to the tradition established by Siloti himself, during the repeat the hidden, majestic melody in the middle voice should come to life. It is this version that I finally transcribed for guitar in the present edition.
