Brian Wright, Tombeau for Anthony Gilbert (1934-2023), Souvenirs de France
For solo guitar.
Anthony Gilbert ( 26th July 1934-5th of July 2023) was a British composer and academic long associated with the Royal Northern College of Music. He also taught for extended periods as Head of composition at the New South Wales State Conservatorium. His works, many for large chamber ensembles, were published by Schott and the University of York Music Press. Several of them were written for particular musicians who performed and recorded them. He wrote a memoir, published in 2021.
Tony, (as his friends called him) was my composition teacher, first at Goldsmiths college, London, and then privately, this was in the late 1960's and early 1970's. We remained friends for more than 50 years.
I have used "Souvenirs de France" in the title as a reference to his love of France and French culture. The French folksong that I quote is "Reveillez-vous".
