The Three Jazz Sketches reflect my love of Elizabethan music and my early love of jazz. My pieces were originally written for the Renaissance lute.

The original titles were as follows:

Byrd's Fancie

The Byrd refers to the jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd, whose recordings with Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim had world-wide success in the 1960's. A Fancie was a common name for a piece in Tudor England.

Dowland in Central Park

This piece was inspired by "Skating in Central Park" by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Like Lewis's, it is a jazz waltz infused with a motive from Dowland's "Tarleton's Riserrectione". It was written to mark the 400th anniversary of John Dowland's death in 1626.

Mr. Brubeck, his thing

This refers to Dave Brubeck, composer and jazz pianist who recorded a world-wide popular success, "Take 5", written by Paul Desmond, the saxophonist in the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
