Travelling the Waves is a title that reflects the character of the piece: moderately fast flowing, steady movement interspersed with calmer moments or broken by gradually more energetic outbursts. The work began without a title but the visit to my home town of Aberdeen of the Tall Ships in 2025 and the nature of the music brought a nautical theme to mind.
As is usually the case in my music, the writing is firmly rooted in tonality, and there are frequent changes of time signature which nevertheless flow naturally.
Most of my guitar pieces are intended for both 6-string guitar or guitar with additional bass strings, and Travelling the Waves is no exception. This edition is fingered for 6-string guitar with the lowest string tuned down to D.
