Nancie Kester, Desert Moonlight

for flute and two guitars.

The piece won 2nd prize in the 2022 Music Teachers Association of California State-wide Composers Today competition.  In 2022, it was performed in San Francisco through the National Association of Composers and was later recorded professionally.

“Desert Moonlight” is a tone poem for two guitars and a flute. This composition was inspired by a traditional Japanese folk song composed 100 years ago by Suguru Sasaki and Masao Kato. The text involves a prince and princess crossing the moonlit desert on a camel. The envisioned setting of the original song might have been the Tottori Sand Dunes, located in Tottori Prefecture on Honshu Island in Japan.
“Desert Moonlight” incorporates variants of the Hirajoshi scale. The composer drew inspiration from the traditional Japanese instruments: shakuhachi and koto.
