Thomas Bocklenberg, Fantasie In Nomine 2, Reflective Variations
for lute in G, 10 courses (French tablature)
Fantasie In Nomine 2, Reflective Variations’ is based on a Gregorian chant that John Taverner (c. 1490–1545) used in his mass Gloria Tibi Trinitas. It is the earliest known use of this Gregorian chant as a cantus firmus in a polyphonic work. The designation ‘In nomine’ derives from the words ‘in nomine Domini’ in the Benedictus of Taverner’s Mass.
Due to the particular technical demands on the fretting hand, the piece is best performed on an instrument with a string length of around 64 cm.
