His first serious studies in guitar began in 1970 with the world-famous jazz guitarist Louis Stewart, and then at the Dylan Todd School of Classical Guitar in Dublin. Within a year he was asked to teach at the school and so began his teaching career which now spans almost 50 years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAlan holds a Master’s Degree in Performance and Musicology from the National University of Ireland, as well as the FTCL, LRSM and ALCM Diplomas. Bach by over 20 years.\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003e These works by Von Westhoff lay in obscurity for over 250 years until Peter Várnai announced their discovery in 1971 in Die Musikforschung. I have included copies of the original scores for those who wish to compare them with my transcription; furthermore, his unconventional use of an eight-line stave is worth viewing. Jonathan Swift, most famous for his book ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ was the Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and a close friend of Carolan. On one occasion, Swift arranged an evening of music in the Deanery of St Patrick’s where a group of Italian musicians and Carolan were guests. Among these Italian guests was the prominent Italian violinist Francesco Geminiani (1667 – 1762) who lived in Dublin for several years c. 1733 – 1740. It is said that Carolan challenged the violinist to a test of musical skill and in response Geminiani performed Vivaldi’s Fifth Violin Concerto - La Tempesta di Mare. He would probably have played only the 1st or 3rd movements as they are both filled with rapid scale passages and therefore guaranteed to impress the gathering. It should be noted here that Carolan was then in his 60’s and was well acquainted with the Italian school of Vivaldi \/ Corelli, a fact that Geminiani was most likely not aware of. Some sources relating to this event mention that Geminiani made -several deliberate errors in the music hoping to have some fun at Carolan’s expense. The Italian guests probably looked upon Carolan as a blind unsophisticated musician, who would not be schooled in ‘music of good taste’. However, when he had finished playing, Carolan whispered to Swift in Irish – ‘’Tá sé air chois air bacaighe’’ – (Here and there it limps and stumbles), then, he took his harp in his hands and performed the same piece perfectly. It is possible that he already knew this work, but many say that his recall was so uniquely developed that he actually performed it after hearing it just once. It was reported that during this time “something extra fine in the way of music took place”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eAs guitarists we greatly admire the two Baroque masters, Bach and Weiss, for their genius and their contribution to the guitar’s repertoire. Although neither wrote for our instrument directly we borrow from their compositions for lute, cello and violin. Therefore, since the guitar as we know it today was not in existence at that time, the Baroque repertoire we perform consists entirely of transcriptions and arrangements. However, I’m sure we would all agree that the modern guitar is a suitable medium for the realisation of much of this music and if it had been available to musicians such as Bach and Weiss, I’m sure they would have written for it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eAndres Segovia’s love of this style prompted him to ask the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce to write pieces in a Baroque style for him to perform in concert. I was fascinated by the countless colourful shapes and designs created by simply placing pieces of colourful sweet wrappings into my new toy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome composers profess that they see certain colours relative to certain notes, this relationship is often referred to as synesthesia or chromesthesia (someone experiencing colours while listening to music). Composers such as Michael Torke and Olivier Messiaen are just two who have composed works with titles such as Ecstatic Orange and Bright Blue Music while Olivier Messiaen’s – Chronochromie (Time-Colour) and Couleurs de la Cité céleste (\"Colours of the Celestial City\") are obvious in their titles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece was written specifically for my guitar class in the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin for the End of Term Concert.
