Professional training includes guitar performance and Western music history (California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles and Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester), Karnatic veena and voice in South India (where he lived from 1972-77), as well as Chogye Zen chant and Samul Nori percussion (Durham University, National Institute of Traditional Arts and Hwa Gye Sa Temple, Seoul). Over a 45-year performing career, Steve has shared his music with listeners in Asia, Europe and the USA. His past arranging work includes large-scale work on Bach and Narvaez, as well as piano music by Haydn and Schoenberg. Today, his « life mission » is his collaboration with composer Alain Féron on a vast cycle of music for 8-string guitar. Indeed, rather than illustrating the poem, Alain Féron seeks to distill its essence. Opening with an oneiric prelude leading to a restless march, followed by a dance reflecting on Féron’s Senegalese childhood, the piece takes a turn through an unexpected transition that leads to a last elliptical development where wisps of previously heard material float in the air and evaporate back into silence. Alain Féron’s music is thus informed by a particular attention to the melodic line, though the line often « dissolves » organically within the music’s global field that – through the magic of Féron’s writing – unifies the harmonic, polyphonic and metrical axes into a seamless whole. The musician making the effort to follow this structural melodic backbone will discover its intensely lyrical expression, guided by a singular dramatic and formal sensibility.

Product: Self-Print (PDF) or Print on Demand

Length: 34 pages

Level: Advanced

Publishing date: 18th June, 2025

Order number: BE-250205

ISMN 979-0-706842-91-2
