Not a big surprise because the interpretation of Bach’s Chaconne was a milestone in Segovia’s career for many years. The real surprise to me was that the composer was not Bach but another German baroque master: Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706). When I tried to find more about this work I became aware that to my great astonishment there was no edition or recording of that piece. This composition showed up in Segovia’s concert programmes between 1937 and 1940. When and where the first performance took place is still an open question. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003eIn a letter to his friend Sophocles Papas dated July, 18th 1939 Segovia wrote that he just had sent music by Pachelbel and other composers to Schott and that it was going to be published very soon but this piece never showed up in Segovia’s series. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003eSo I went several times to the Schott archive in Mainz, where I had the opportunity to examine the complete correspondence between Segovia and Schott. I could not find any trace of that piece. Then the most popular ciacona in f-minor by the master from Nürnberg fell into my hands. Looking at the bass line I was immediately sure that this was the very piece that I had been looking for. The Spanish cadence, so typical for flamenco pieces was the base of that composition. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\n\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003eAt that point, I consulted a colleague and friend of mine the German guitarist Thomas Bocklenberg who is also a lute player and a trained composer, to make a transcription of this piece. We started a discussion about tonality and other aspects of the ciacona. Up to now, I could not find any programme of Segovia that mentions the tonality of his arrangement, so different solutions seemed to be possible. Tuning down 2 strings to play it in g-minor was one option but looking into Segovia’s placing of it in his programmes makes it not very probable that he chose this possibility. The Prelude is obviously borrowed from Bach's BWV 846, but the chord voicing has been altered for the harmony to fall more naturally across the six strings.\u003cbr\u003eThe fugue, however, is my own creation to give guitarists a piece that sounds similar to Bach's style of composition yet falls under the fingers more easily than his transcribed Fugues. I do not in any way want to compare the quality of my fugue with any of Bach's. I am an ardent fan of the absolute genius of Bach and consider him to be foremost among the ranks of western composers. Jonathan Swift, most famous for his book ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ was the Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin and a close friend of Carolan. On one occasion, Swift arranged an evening of music in the Deanery of St Patrick’s where a group of Italian musicians and Carolan were guests. Among these Italian guests was the prominent Italian violinist Francesco Geminiani (1667 – 1762) who lived in Dublin for several years c. 1733 – 1740. It is said that Carolan challenged the violinist to a test of musical skill and in response Geminiani performed Vivaldi’s Fifth Violin Concerto - La Tempesta di Mare. He would probably have played only the 1st or 3rd movements as they are both filled with rapid scale passages and therefore guaranteed to impress the gathering. It should be noted here that Carolan was then in his 60’s and was well acquainted with the Italian school of Vivaldi \/ Corelli, a fact that Geminiani was most likely not aware of. Some sources relating to this event mention that Geminiani made -several deliberate errors in the music hoping to have some fun at Carolan’s expense. The Italian guests probably looked upon Carolan as a blind unsophisticated musician, who would not be schooled in ‘music of good taste’. However, when he had finished playing, Carolan whispered to Swift in Irish – ‘’Tá sé air chois air bacaighe’’ – (Here and there it limps and stumbles), then, he took his harp in his hands and performed the same piece perfectly. It is possible that he already knew this work, but many say that his recall was so uniquely developed that he actually performed it after hearing it just once. It is very likely that Bach and Weiss already knew each other by this time, however Bach’s eldest son Wilhelm Friedemann (1710 – 1784) who was organist at St. Sophia's Church in Dresden had become well acquainted with Weiss. It is said that this meeting was organised by him so he and Weiss travelled the 80 odd kilometres from Dresden to Leipzig and stayed there for an entire month. It was reported that during this time “something extra fine in the way of music took place”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eAs guitarists we greatly admire the two Baroque masters, Bach and Weiss, for their genius and their contribution to the guitar’s repertoire. Although neither wrote for our instrument directly we borrow from their compositions for lute, cello and violin. Therefore, since the guitar as we know it today was not in existence at that time, the Baroque repertoire we perform consists entirely of transcriptions and arrangements. However, I’m sure we would all agree that the modern guitar is a suitable medium for the realisation of much of this music and if it had been available to musicians such as Bach and Weiss, I’m sure they would have written for it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eAndres Segovia’s love of this style prompted him to ask the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce to write pieces in a Baroque style for him to perform in concert. This resulted in a number of very successful compositions, which for a while, were attributed to Weiss and another composer Alesandro Scarlatti (1660 – 1725), these pieces are still available today. I have included copies of the original scores for those who wish to compare them with my transcription; furthermore, his unconventional use of an eight-line stave is worth viewing.
