DeVasto’s music has been broadcast from coast to coast in North America and internationally in Asia and Africa. His piece, Homenaje a Gaspar Sanz, won First Prize for the Classical Guitar Society of Victoria’s 2015 International Composition Competition. His works are published by The SCI Journal of Music Scores and Bergmann Edition, and recordings of his compositions appear on Navona Records. Additionally, DeVasto is featured as a pianist on several albums, including Dreams of Pangea (SouthportRecords), and Reflection (Flitterswift), featuring renowned saxophonist Mark Colby. DeVasto earned his PhD from The University of Iowa in 2009, studying under David Gompper and John Rapson, and has formerly served on the music faculties at Lindenwood University and McKendree University. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Elmhurst College in the Chicago area. Sanz's Instrucción de música sobre la Guitarra Espanola represents both a pedagogical method of learning guitar technique, as well as a voluminous collection of solo guitar masterworks. Among this extensive collection are two pieces, Canarios and Passacalles, to which these present works are in homage. The first piece, Sinsontes. (Mockingbird) is a playful response to Sanz's Canarios (Canaries). The theme is recognizable but heavily transformed melodically (fragmentation \u0026amp; sequence), harmonically (substitution \u0026amp; expansion), and rhythmically (asymmetrical meter). The second piece, Passacaglia, like Sanz's Passacalles, is a theme and variations in triple meter based on a recurring bass line. The bass line in this case, is taken from a common \"stock\" bass from the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle2\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBaroque period utilizing descending chromatic motion. The piece represents a scenic trip at dusk that moves towards a more celestial ending with harmonics reflecting the onset of a starry night. Although scored in 12\/8, the beat is subdivided numerous ways resulting in a mixture of both compound and simple meter. The final étude, Prairie Path, is a study for right-hand technique while utilizing unusual chord shapes in the left hand. The title references a nature trail stretching west from Chicago. It is essentially a study of endurance.
