This was a fruitful and inspiring time. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eI first composed a rather energetic piece which later transformed into the third movement of this sonata. It was joined later by the second movement, a meditative piece with some jazz flavour. I struggled for quite a while to complete the sonata with a first movement. Several attempts were discarded, before I finally found a peculiar musical form which completed the puzzle. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eThe first, principal subject of the first movement (Allegretto agitato) is based on an impetuous triplet motion of quartal chords. It emerges gradually, phrase by phrase, in bars 5-6, 20-21, and 30-32 from the surrounding “protoplasm” of contrasting motifs and themes “communicating” with each other. After the climax in bars 44-46, the principal subject appears at full power in bars 47-53. After that, the second subject (Largo rubato) appears in the form of an intimate flageolet melody in bars 55-66. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eThe second movement is based on a sequence of jazz-like chords. These resemble the quartal chords from the principal subject of the first movement, but somewhat shifted towards D-major rather than D-minor. Together with a separate bass line and percussive effects, this resembles a “jazz trio” with piano, double bass, and drums. The movement has a meditative lyrical character. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"fontstyle0\"\u003eThe third movement starts with an energetic theme (Allegretto con fuoco) involving dramatic chords, passages, and dance-like quintuple-meter rhythms. The middle section (bars18-41) recalls the principal subject of the first movement in the form of a slow waltz. There follows is a recapitulation of the main theme (Allegretto con fuoco). My Japanese residence was located in a small town Wako-shi in the Greater Tokyo area. The name “Wako-shi” is written with three Chinese characters: “wa” (和) – “harmony”, “ko” (光) – “light”, and “shi” (市) – “town”. I immediately liked these meaningful characters and decided to use them in the title of a musical piece.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eApart from this, the music of the sonata does not have any specifically Japanese influences, it is rather Western in style. It has a peculiar refrain form though, where the first movement is split into a set of four short movements Ia–Id reflecting upon the same prevailing themes: the main theme (bars 1–9 of Ia), the second theme (bars 10–15 of Ia), and the third theme (bars 18–20 of Ia). The short movements Ia–Id alternate with independent movements II “Toccata”, III “Adagio”, and IV “Prelude”. One can notice that these movements are all based on some sort of repetitive toccata or ostinato patterns.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn contrast to stable and self-sufficient characters of movements II–IV, the themes of the refrain movements Ia–Id are rather unstable and open. They tend to E major that seems to be unachievable in its perfect form: the notes d-sharp, f-double-sharp, and a-sharp are repeatedly heard instead of e, g-sharp, and h.
