It represents my meeting with the great Hungarian pianist and teacher György Sebök during his summer masterclasses in Ernen (Switzerland), which I still consider today to have been a truly life-changing experience. I first heard it performed by him at the end of the final concert there, and the utter beauty of his interpretation profoundly moved me. The urge to adapt the piece for guitar has, since then, never left me. Still, several years passed before I finally began working on the transcription in earnest, using the original organ version and Busoni’s piano transcription. I think the enormous desire to succeed was tempered by the fear that the piece might turn out to be impossible to play and that it would be unattainable beyond the indelible memory of it. The result you have now in your hands will always remain for me, the point of departure for the vast Bach transcription project that has kept me occupied ever since.

Product: Digital PDF or Print on Demand

Pages: 12

Level: Intermediate

ISMN 979-0-706831-36-7

Order number: BE-221208

Listen to Marek Wegrzyk play the Adagio from the Toccata BWV 664:

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FWT_X8UqLz0" title="Adagio en la mineur de la toccata, BWV 564 (Arr. It is certainly no coincidence that the keys of five of his cello suites stem from the tunings of three of the instrument’s open strings. Here, the choice of A major arises from the guitar’s open fifth string which is analogous to the G major relating to the cello’s third open string. This idea inspires yet another change of tuning (6th string- D) which is essential to maintain the original perfect fifth interval between the last two strings. Already used during the Renaissance, this technique was particularly developed during the Baroque period by Heinrich Biber in his Rosary Sonatas for violin, where no less than 14 different scordature were used.

Scordatura increases the sonorous range of the instrument and facilitates the performance of certain chords and fingerings impossible to achieve with normal tuning.

The advantage is that it makes our perception of the musical discourse extremely clear. Bach himself applied scordatura in his Suite n°5 for cello, allowing a large number of four-note chords that are otherwise impossible to play, and creating a particular resonance indicative of the composer’s desire to fully exploit the instrument’s harmonic potential.

Read an interview with Marek Wegrzyk...

Product: Digital PDF or Print on Demand

Pages: 44

Level: Advanced

Order number: BE-250309

ISMN 979-0-706843-55-1

Listen to Ricardo Lopes Garcia playing BWV 1001:
<iframe title="J. The third string in F# is obviously a very well-known change, but the fourth string in C# was an experiment that created surprising results. By no means is it a miracle solution, but it provides more fluid and comfortable fingerings and enhances certain tonalities (D major, A major, B minor, F# minor), which enables multiple original harmonic solutions.

Introduction

The two pieces presented here are not very well known to guitarists. I stumbled upon them while searching for new material to transcribe and was inspired by Wilhelm Kempff's version of the Lamento. Around the same time, György Kurtág's recording of his arrangement for four hands (with his wife Márta) of the Cantata's first movement, and Seymour Bernstein’s solo version, also caught my attention.
Despite being composed when Bach was in his early twenties, these works convey an extremely dense and mature spiritual message and although apparently contrasting in character, they have more in common than you would expect at first sight. They both have explicit, very slow tempo indications (Adagiosissimo and Molto adagio), which is relatively rare. Finally, this arrangement brings them even closer together as the key for the first transcription is E minor and for the second E major.

Product: Digital PDF or Print on Demand

Pages: 16

Level: Intermediate

ISMN 979-0-706846-39-2

Order number: BE-260303

Watch on YouTube:

J.
