Mark Houghton was born in Liverpool in 1959 and began playing the guitar at the age of seven. Between 1980 and 1987, Mark performed and recorded as a session guitarist, playing on Classical, electric and jazz guitars.

From 1988, Mark studied Classical guitar with Stanley Yates and during this period also received private tuition from Stepan Rak on the performance of Rak’s music. In 1997 Mark was awarded an Associate Diploma in guitar per­formance from the London College of Music (for which, after receiving high pass marks, he was chosen to play at the biennial Lloyd-Webber Medal Concert). In August 2000 Mark won the Chris Kilvington Memorial Composition Prize – held at Dillington Music Festival – for his guitar quartet, Symphonic Dance No. 1. In 2007 Mark won the CGML Composition Competition, hosted in Brazil, with his composition Aurora for Flute, Clarinet, and Guitar (now published in duet form for Clarinet and Guitar with Les Productions d’OZ). From 2014, In the USA, thanks to collaborations with the music educator, Chuck Hulihan, Mark has had premiere performances of his ensemble music at 3 consecutive Guitar Foundation of America Conventions. Thanks to his successful ‘Guitarchestra’ Guitar Sextet Series of publications, his ensemble music is regularly played in many parts of the world and, at home in the UK, with premiere performances by the prestigious National Youth Guitar Ensemble (directed by Gerald Garcia) and Cambridge Guitar Orchestra (directed by Valerie Hartzell). In 2017 Mark was one of several composers tasked with arranging (for solo guitar and guitar trio) the music of the former King of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The music was then performed at a major music event in celebration of the King, in Bangkok, on the 14th October 2017. Also in 2017, Mark has had three feature articles on writing/ arranging for Classical Guitar published with the USA-based International magazine, Classical Guitar.

Mark has more than 120 original works published with Les Productions d’OZ, Chanterelle, Mel Bay, Lathkill Music, and Corda Music Productions.
